A 76-year-old man from Jensen Beach is dead after a boating accident that happened on Tuesday in Hell’s Gate in the St. Lucie River.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman stated that Matthew Jones along with two other passengers collided with another boat that was driven by Reynold Miranda.
The incident happened when Miranda was in a 17-foot Hydra Sports boat and heading south on St. Lucie River. Jones and passengers, who were identified as 76-year-old Patrick Smith and 74-year-old Anthony Rego was in a 21-foot Maverick boat traveling north of the river when the two boats hit each other head-on by Sandsprit Park.
One of the witnesses who happened to be an off-duty Sheriff’s Marine Deputy Michael Libasci stated that while he was fishing, he heard the two boats crash and immediately rushed to help them.
Jones, Rego, and Miranda were shortly rushed to Martin Hospital South in Stuart, FL
Rego and Miranda are suffering from injuries due to the crash, but Jones was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
FWC Spokeswoman Carol Lyn Parrish stated that the crash will take about 30 days to months to complete the investigation.
