Three-Vehicle Collision on 131 Street North Seriously Injures Jonathan Specht
Largo, FL (October 30, 2017) – A police car chase ended in a three-vehicle collision where one man was seriously injured Sunday evening.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred on 131 Street North near 102nd Avenue North around 9 p.m. October 29.
The report showed that 39-year-old James Gerard Paes, of Lithia, drove a 2017 Nissan Titan at a high speed as he was fleeing from Largo police.
As Paes tried to overtake a 1998 Dodge Durango driven by 27-year-old John Dietrich, of Seminole, he was unable to control his vehicle and struck the left rear of the Durango. This then caused him to rear-end a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 40-year-old Jonathan Specht, of St. Petersburg. Specht’s vehicle left the road and overturned on the west shoulder.
Meanwhile, Paes’ vehicle struck a fence and attempted to flee on foot. He was shortly detained by Largo police and was brought to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Specht sustained serious injuries and was transported to the same hospital for treatment.
Dietrich and his two other passengers were uninjured.
Local media reported Paes as a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy. He has since been suspended without pay and is facing several charges.
