Charles Zalcberg Killed in Andrews Avenue Pedestrian Accident in Oakland Park
Oakland Park, Florida (December 29, 2017) – A 70-year-old man was killed in a Tuesday evening hit-and-run crash in Oakland Park, according to a police report.
Charles Zalcberg, 70, of Lauderdale-by-the-sea, died in the crash that occurred on Andrews Avenue, just north of Commercial Boulevard, shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26.
Police said Zalcberg had just stepped out of a Broward County bus and was attempting to cross Andrews Avenue when a vehicle turned from eastbound Commercial Boulevard onto northbound Andrews Avenue and struck him.
Zalcberg was rushed to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the crash.
A witness followed the vehicle up to the owner’s home in Pompano Beach and the driver, identified as Jose Francisco Ortiz, 73, was later arrested.
Charges are pending an ongoing investigation.
