Cruise industries have grown to become one of the largest travel companies throughout the world. Many people are wanting to experience their vacation overseas. While it has become a popular method of traveling, there have been many major cruise ship disasters throughout the years. Here are some of the major disasters to ever occur on cruise ships:
My Heart Will Go On
One of the most well-known cruise ship disasters took place in 1912 when the “unsinkable ship” sunk. It was the last time any cruise line ever advertised a ship as being unsinkable. The Titanic, which many are aware of because of the movie, struck an iceberg and sunk. Sadly, more than 1,500 passengers and crew members were killed. To this day, there has not been a greater cruise ship disaster than that one.
Are you Feeling Sick?
The Explorer of the Seas, a cruise ship from Royal Caribbean, holds the title of the most people to get sick while on board. In 2014, a trip on the Explorer of the seas rendered 630 passengers and 54 crew members sick with the famous virus known as “norovirus”. To this date, no other cruise ships have reached the amount of sick from this cruise ship, although Celebrity Mercury is not far behind, with 400 passengers.
It’s Hot, Wait It’s a Fire!
A Royal Caribbean cruise ship containing 4,000 passengers was set out for a 4-day to the Caribbean but turned out to an 8-day disaster. The engine caught on fire, causing it to stay stranded in the Gulf of Mexico without a working septic tank, air-conditioning, or air condition. Many passengers sought legal action following this incident.
Abandon Ship! Not.
The Costa Concordia struck a rock, causing water to set in the engine room in 2012. The cruise drifted and grounded near the shallow waters of Giglio Island. At this point, one would have expected the captain to order an abandon ship, but he did not until more than an hour after the collision. Due to the delay, all 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew members could not be taken out in time. This lead the death of 32 people.
Disasters Overseas Can Happen
Many of these disasters could have been prevented had precaution been taken. When a preventable accident that ended with injuries occurred on a cruise ship, the victim has a legal right to pursue action against the negligent crew member or cruise line that should have maintained the passenger’s safe. The Miami firm works to protect the rights of those who were injured or died while vacationing on a cruise ship. Percy Martinez Law Firm’s personal injury lawyers while on a cruise will not rest until the cruise line has paid for the damages that they have caused.
