William Swartz Killed and 2 Injured in Fatal Tampa Multi-Car Crash on Sligh Avenue
Tampa, Florida (December 6, 2017) – According to the Florida Highway Patrol, one person was killed, and two others were injured following a racing crash Tuesday morning in Tampa.
The victim killed was identified by the FHP as 88-year-old William Val Swartz, of Tampa.
The fatal incident took place at precisely 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, December 5 on Sligh Avenue.
The FHP stated that 31-year-old Joseph Obregon, the driver of a 2012 Dodge Ram headed west on Sligh, and the driver of a white pickup positioned alongside the Dodge were seen by witnesses revving their engines at a traffic light at Florida Avenue. They then rapidly accelerated from a stop, reaching a speed estimated to be 70 mph.
Obregon’s vehicle lost traction and collided with a 2008 Toyota RAV4 that was crossing Sligh Avenue from north to south along Highland Avenue. The impact of the collision caused the Toyota to crash into a power pole. The Dodge then went on and struck a 2011 Honda Accord before coming to a halt.
Swartz, the passenger of the Toyota, was killed in the incident while the driver suffered critical injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Honda sustained minor wounds.
Obregon is being charged with driving recklessly with serious bodily injury, vehicular homicide, racing, and two counts of reckless driving with injury and property damage.
Authorities are looking for the driver of the white pickup.
