51-Year-Old Man Killed in Major Multi-Vehicle Accident on I-95 in Fellsmere
Fellsmere, Florida (January 24, 2018) – A Vero Beach man was killed in a major multi-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning in Fellsmere, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
51-year-old William Conn died in the accident that took place at around 6:11 a.m. on Interstate 95, just south of the Indian River-Brevard County line.
Troopers said a 2000 Volvo driven northbound on I-95 by Tracey Williams, 45, of Fort Pierce, was pulling a trailer and traveling in the center lane when the left front tire blew out. As Williams tried to pull over onto the left side, the driver of a 2009 Chevy Impala traveling behind her, Katrina Steele, 26, of Melbourne, attempted to hit her brakes but ended up striking the trailer pulled by Williams.
Conn was the driver of a 2006 Pontiac traveling in the center lane that also crashed into the back of the Williams’ trailer and came to a rest facing east in the center lane. The Pontiac was then hit by a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta being driven by Desmond Smith, 40, of Daytona Beach.
The impact caused the Pontiac to flip and come to a rest on its wheels in the right and center lanes.
Conn was pronounced dead at the scene.
Matthew Hardy, 34, driving a 2017 Audi was approaching the scene when he tried to weave through the crashed vehicles but struck Williams’ trailer, rotated and stopped in the median.
There were no other injuries reported.
FHP is investigating the crash.
