Okeechobee Woman Killed in Multi-Car Crash on SR 78 in Glades County
Glades County, Florida (December 16, 2017) – A major crash on State Road 78 in Glades County left a woman dead, and a child hospitalized on Friday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The three-vehicle crash occurred at around 7:15 a.m. on Friday, December 15, on SR 78 near Sixth Street.
Troopers said Jorge Reyes Romero, 37, of Miami was driving a 2005 Freightliner truck southbound on SR 78 when he rear-ended a 2007 Freightliner truck, driven in front of him by Reynol Hernandez Seijas, 40, of Miami, who was slowing down to traffic.
The impact caused Romero’s truck to swerve onto the path of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, driven northbound by Tammy Helfinstine, 33, of Okeechobee, troopers said.
According to FHP, Helfinstine was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
A passenger riding in Helfinstine’s car, Jacob B. Simms, 11, of Okeechobee, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. A toddler who was also a passenger in the vehicle was not injured.
Romero and Seijas were not hurt.
Romero was issued a citation for careless driving.
