Chicago Man Killed in Port Charlotte Auto-Pedestrian Accident at Veteran and Theresa Boulevards

Port Charlotte, Florida (December 13, 2017) – An elderly man who was fatally struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in Port Charlotte has been identified, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Authorities identified the victim as 86-year-old Ralph Smith, of Chicago.
The fatal accident took place at 2:19 p.m. Tuesday, December 12 at the intersection of Veterans and Theresa boulevards.
According to FHP, 27-year-old Benjamin Umbras, of Port Charlotte, was traveling east on Veterans Boulevard in a 2000 Acura TL in the left lane approaching Theresa Boulevard. At the same time, Smith was standing on the northeast grassy shoulder at the intersection.
As the vehicle began to travel southwest across Veterans Boulevard, Smith darted southward directly into the path of the Acura. Umbras swerved to the right and struck the south curb and ditch after hitting Smith, FHP said.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene while Umbras was treated for minor injuries at Fawcett Memorial Hospital.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
