2 Killed in Multiple-Vehicle Wreck on Florida Turnpike Extension
Miami, FL (October 20, 2017) – A multiple vehicle collision on the Florida Turnpike Extension early Friday morning has killed two people and sent another to the hospital with injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to an accident on the northbound lanes of SW 216th Street exit ramp just before 4 a.m. October 20. The accident involved three vehicles, one of which was a prisoner transport van.
The report showed that a Toyota Scion was driving southbound on the northbound lanes. The driver of a Homestead police van swerved to avoid hitting the wrong-way vehicle but ended up getting sideswiped. A Volkswagen Jetta driving behind the van struck the Scion in a head-on crash.
The impact killed the driver of the Scion at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the Jetta was transported to Jackson South Hospital, where he was later declared dead.
The van was transporting three prisoners at the time of the crash. One of the prisoners was reportedly injured and was transported to the hospital.
The accident shut down all northbound lanes of the road for six hours before they were re-opened.
The FHP is continuing its investigation into the collision by looking at available toll cameras.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the victims in the accident.
