Man Killed When Vehicle Drives into Canal after Pembroke Pines Crash near Taft St. and 91st Ave.
Pembroke Pines, Florida (January 4, 2018) – A Hollywood man was killed on Wednesday afternoon when his vehicle plunged into a canal after a collision in Pembroke Pines.
According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, the crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 3 near Taft Street and 91st Avenue.
Police said 48-year-old Michael Almeida was driving a Chevrolet Silverado westbound on Taft Street when he struck the back of a Saturn Ion. The impact caused Almeida’s vehicle to veer off the roadway, drive through the guardrail and plunge into the canal.
The force of the rear-end collision pushed the Saturn into the eastbound lanes.
Good Samaritans rushed in and pulled Almeida, whose vehicle was nearly fully submerged in the water.
Almeida was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital with major injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
No one in the other vehicle was hurt.
Police in Pembroke Pines are conducting an investigation into the crash.
