Jose Cepeda and Son Struck and Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver on SR-836 in Miami-Dade Identified
Miami-Dade, Florida (February 10, 2018) – The father and his son who were fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Friday morning on Florida’s Turnpike in northwest Miami-Dade have been identified as 57-year-old Jose Eduardo Cepeda Luna, and 34-year-old Cesar Eduardo Cepeda, according to a news release from Florida Highway Patrol.
The deadly collision occurred at around 5 a.m. Friday, February 9, on State Road 836
According to a preliminary investigation report, Cesar Cepeda was operating a 2016 Chevy Silverado eastbound on State Road 836 from the northbound lanes of the Turnpike when he collided with the outside guardrail. The impact caused the car to rotate to the outside grassy shoulder facing northwest.
The FHP investigators stated that Cesar was able to get out of the vehicle; he then called authorities and his father too for help. The father, Jose Cepeda, arrived shortly after in a 2017 Chevy Equinox.
Investigators believed that the two were standing outside Cesar’s truck when a 2014 Chevy Camaro, driven eastbound on SR-836, lost control, drove into the outside grassy shoulder and struck both the two men and their cars.
Occupants of the Camaro got out of the car and drove away in the Chevy Equinox. They then abandoned the Equinox in Homestead.
An investigation to locate the hit-and-run driver is ongoing.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
