James Madaus Seriously Hurt in Bicycle Accident on Jacaranda Boulevard in Sarasota County
Sarasota County, Florida (February 14, 2018) – A bicycle rider was seriously injured after colliding with an SUV Tuesday morning near Venice in Sarasota County, according to a local news source.
The victim has been identified as 76-year-old James Madaus, of Venice.
The accident took place at about 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, February 13 on Jacaranda Boulevard south of Hatchett Creek Road.
Authorities reported that Madaus was riding a bicycle south in the right lane of Jacaranda Boulevard. At the same time, 40-year-old Todd Ortlieb, of Venice was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee south in the left lane of Jacaranda.
Madaus attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Jacaranda as Ortlieb approached. Ortlieb swerved to the left into the grass median in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the right side of the Jeep collided with the left side of the bicycle.
Madaus sustained serious injuries and was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Ortlieb did not sustain injuries in the accident. He was wearing a seat belt.
The crash is being investigated by authorities.
