Authorities have identified a missing first-year student at Florida International University after the pedestrian bridge collapsed on Thursday.
Alexa Duran has been identified as one of the trap victims of the collapsed bridge.
Two friends of Duran, Manny Perez and Lynnet Gomez stated that Duran was in her Toyota SUV when the bridge fell. Perez stated, “The way the bridge fell, it fell on the driver’s side.”
Her other friend Richie Humble, who was in the car with Duran, was riding on the passenger side and was able to get out.
According to Humble, “we were parked at a red light and I started to hear the bridge creek, so I look up and I saw the bridge falling on top of us. It fell on the roof of the car and kind of caved in on my neck and squished me down. But I didn’t really know what was going on at all. I screamed Alexa’s name over and over again, but I didn’t hear anything.”
Duran has not been able to be located and her family has no luck of looking for her after attempting to call hospitals across the county.
Alexa Duran was a freshman at Florida International University majoring in Political Science. She is a Ft. Lauderdale native and attended a private Catholic school, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School before attending FIU. Her friends described her as someone who lightens up the room every time she enters.
At this time, other victims are still being located in the rubble and authorities have confirmed four victims dead. Names are not being released until families have been notified.
