FHP Trooper Injured in Car Crash at Okeechobee Road and Palmetto Expressway Identified as Daniel Cruz
Hialeah, Florida (December 10, 2017) – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper who was seriously injured while working the scene of an earlier crash early Sunday morning has been identified, a local news source reported.
Authorities identified the officer as Daniel Cruz.
The accident happened at around 1 a.m. Sunday, December 10 on Okeechobee Road near the Palmetto Expressway.
Cruz was working at the scene of an earlier 2-vehicle crash when a blue Hyundai Veloster driven south by 26-year-old John Bencosme of Miami crashed into one of the cars involved in the first collision. The force caused the Hyundai to spin into Cruz, throwing him several feet into the air.
Cruz sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by a helicopter to Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center.
Bencosme was given a sobriety test, and officers confirmed that he was indeed intoxicated. The driver faces multiple charges including driving under the influence and causing serious bodily injury.
We wish a quick recovery to Daniel Cruz. It is disheartening when a reckless party subjects an innocent person to suffering.
