18-Year-Old Baylee Shirah Killed in Polk County Car Accident on State Road 33
Polk City, Florida (February 16, 2018) – An 18-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident at an intersection in Polk City on Thursday evening, according to Polk City Sheriff’s Office.
The crash took place at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 15, near the intersection of State Road 33 and Mount Olive Road.
Deputies said Baylee Shirah, 18, of Polk City, was driving a 2006 blue Saturn Ion sedan westbound on Mount Olive Road when she failed to yield at the intersection and entered into the path of a 2000 silver Chevrolet Silverado, driven northbound on S.R. 33 by Austin Smith, 18, of Polk County.
Shirah was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in her vehicle, Hannah Combee, 21, of Lakeland, was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in critical condition.
Investigators said impairment and speed were unlikely factors in the crash.
The crash is under investigation.
