Manatee, Florida (January 12, 2018) – One person was hospitalized on Thursday morning following a crash involving a wrong-way driver in Manatee, according to a police report.
The two-vehicle accident took place at around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, January 11, on Buckeye Road, east of Carter Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A 47-year-old Wimauma man was driving a 2013 Ford F150 and pulling a trailer westbound on Buckeye Road when the driver got distracted at a curve and traveled into the path of oncoming traffic.
A 34-year-old Lakeland man was driving a 2018 Kenworth tractor-trailer eastbound on Buckeye Road and attempted to drift sideways to avoid a collision but ended up crashing into the Ford.
The crash caused the Ford to rotate, and its trailer got trapped beneath the tractor-trailer.
The accident also led to the spillage of approximately fifty pounds of powder sulfur that was being transported by the tractor-trailer.
Emergency crews responded to the crash and contained the spill.
The driver of the Ford was rushed to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg with serious injuries.
The driver of the tractor was treated for minor injuries at South Bay Hospital in Sun City.
The Ford driver was cited for wrong-way driving.
We wish a quick recovery to the victims of this accident. It is disheartening when a reckless party subjects an innocent person to suffering.
